New Delhi: India has reaffirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) will remain suspended until Pakistan ceases its support for cross-border terrorism.
During a media briefing the MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that the treaty has been in abeyance since the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in 26 fatalities. This decision follows India’s military operation, “Operation Sindoor,” launched in May 2025, aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure in response to the attack. Jaiswal emphasized that the restoration of the treaty is contingent upon a credible and irreversible halt to Pakistan’s sponsorship of terrorism. He dismissed criticisms from Islamabad regarding India’s hydroelectric projects on the Chenab and Beas rivers, asserting that India’s international engagements are driven by its own foreign policy interests. He also reaffirmed India’s strategic autonomy in maintaining relationships with other countries, underscoring the importance of its international engagements. The operational effects of the treaty’s suspension are evident at the Baglihar Dam in Jammu and Kashmir, where the dam’s gates remain closed over a year after the treaty’s suspension. This situation reflects a significant shift in India’s water management and hydroelectric strategy in the region. Additionally, India has rejected a May 15, 2026, ruling from what it deems an “illegally constituted” Court of Arbitration regarding treaty interpretation and maximum pondage, asserting that it does not recognize the court’s authority. As the IWT enters its second year in abeyance, the situation illustrates India’s firm diplomatic and strategic stance, linking regional stability and resource management to the broader issue of state-sponsored terrorism.

Jammu: Authorities have imposed a ban on bike and cab service provider Rapido in Jammu and Kashmir due to company functioning without the required permissions.
Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Jammu, Jasmeet Singh, issued a circular stating that the company was operating without an aggregator certificate, making its services illegal in the Union Territory.
The action follows a statement by Transport Commissioner Vishesh Paul Mahajan, who clarified that Rapido does not hold a licence to operate in Jammu and Kashmir. In a post on X, Mahajan said his office had received multiple complaints regarding the company’s services in different parts of the UT and warned commuters against using them.
“Rapido does not have a licence to operate in Jammu and Kashmir. Anybody participating in the service or using it is doing so at his or her own risk,” Mahajan said, adding that directions had already been issued to officials to take action against the “illegal service.”
RTO Jasmeet Singh stated that any aggregator company must register with the Transport Commissioner’s office and obtain the necessary approvals before starting operations in the region. He further noted that Rapido would be required to establish a local office and set up a control room to ensure proper monitoring of vehicles and passengers.
Highlighting security concerns, the RTO said unregulated services could pose risks if misused by anti-social or anti-national elements, making tracking difficult. He emphasized that verification of vehicles, drivers, and related documents is essential to ensure public safety.
At the same time, officials maintained that the government does not intend to inconvenience the public but stressed that all services must comply with regulations to ensure both passenger safety and national security

Jammu: In a tragic development in the Kathua murder case, the younger brother of the slain youth has succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS Jammu, officials said on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Nikhil Singh (16), died late Sunday night while undergoing treatment for critical head injuries at AIIMS Vijaypur.
The assault had already claimed the life of his elder brother Nakul Singh (18) earlier this week.
Police have arrested 19-year-old Parth Verma alias Sumit in connection with the case.
According to investigators, the accused allegedly killed Nakul inside his house in Ward No. 10 of Kathua on May 6, following an argument over a suspected love rivalry.
Police said the accused, a friend of the victim, attacked Nakul with a cricket bat during the altercation, leading to his death on the spot.
Nikhil reportedly entered the house during the assault and was attacked by the accused in an alleged attempt to eliminate an eyewitness. He had been on ventilator support since the incident before succumbing to his injuries.
Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma had earlier said the case was cracked using technical surveillance and sustained interrogation.
Police also recovered the blood-stained cricket bat used in the crime, along with the deceased’s mobile phone.
With Nikhil’s death, the case is likely to be treated as a double murder. Police said further investigation is underway

Drug abuse means using substances like alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, or other drugs in a harmful way. It includes the overuse of prescription medicines or illegal drugs. This behavior often starts casually but turns into an addiction that affects both physical and mental health. Drug abuse can happen to people of all ages but is especially common among teenagers and young adults. There are many reasons why someone may begin using drugs. Some do it to relieve stress or emotional pain, while others fall into it due to peer pressure or curiosity. Lack of guidance at home, poor school performance, or exposure to drug-using environments can increase the chances. People may also start with legal substances like cigarettes or painkillers and then shift to stronger drugs.Drug abuse has serious short-term effects such as dizziness, poor judgment, memory loss, and mood swings. Over time, the damage becomes more severe.
Addicts may suffer from heart problems, liver failure, lung diseases, or brain damage. The body builds a tolerance, leading to higher doses and increased health risks. Withdrawal symptoms also make it hard to stop once addicted.Addiction deeply affects mental health. People who use drugs often face anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and even suicidal thoughts. They may lose interest in relationships, goals, and daily activities. Over time, drug abuse damages the brain’s ability to control emotions, increasing anger, confusion, or violent behavior.Students who abuse drugs often miss classes, perform poorly in exams, or drop out of school. Their focus and memory weaken, which affects learning. In working life, addiction leads to job loss, poor decisions, and damaged reputation. Career progress becomes nearly impossible for someone struggling with substance abuse.Drug abuse often leads to broken families. Addicts may lie, steal, or become aggressive, creating mistrust and conflict at home.

“Drug abuse severely impacts personal well-being and social stability, leading to health issues and fractured relationships. Prevention and recovery are achievable through a combination of education, family support, and early intervention, requiring a collective effort to ensure a healthier future.”

Parents, siblings, and children suffer emotionally. Constant stress and financial problems make family life unstable. In some cases, children of addicts are placed in foster care or grow up in unsafe environments.Buying drugs regularly costs a lot of money. When Abusers cannot afford drugs, they may turn to stealing or selling illegal substances. This behavior often brings them into conflict with the law. Criminal records and jail time make it harder to find jobs or lead a normal life in the future. Many countries have strict laws against using, selling, or possessing drugs. Those caught can face fines, jail time, or rehabilitation orders.
A criminal record stays for years and affects employment, education, and even travel opportunities. Young people must understand these consequences before making risky choices.Overcoming addiction is possible with support and treatment. Rehabilitation centers offer detox services, therapy, and life skills training. Abusers are taught to manage stress, control urges, and rebuild their lives. Support from family, friends, and professionals is essential for lasting recovery. Regular counseling and healthy habits help prevent relapse.
Preventing drug abuse starts with knowledge. Schools should offer drug education programs, while parents must talk openly with children. Public awareness campaigns can change mindsets and warn against drug use. Helping young people find safe hobbies, good friends, and emotional support reduces the risk of addiction. Drug abuse is a serious problem that affects individuals and society. It causes health damage, emotional pain, family breakdown, and legal trouble. The key to prevention is education, strong family support, and early intervention. With awareness and treatment, recovery is possible. Everyone must work together to create a drug-free, healthy future.
Srinagar: The Embassy of India in Tehran on Thursday issued a fresh advisory strongly urging Indian citizens to refrain from travelling to Iran amid continuing regional tensions and disruptions to air travel.
The advisory follows reports of limited resumption of flights between India and Iran but cautions that “airspace restrictions and operational uncertainties” persist, significantly affecting international flight operations to and from the country.
Reiterating earlier warnings, the embassy advised that Indian nationals should not travel to Iran by air or land until further notice.
In a more urgent directive, the embassy called upon Indian citizens currently residing in Iran to leave the country at the earliest. It recommended that departures be undertaken through designated land border routes and strictly in coordination with embassy authorities.
The embassy has released emergency contact numbers for Indian nationals requiring support: +989128109115, +989128109109, +989128109102, and +989932179359. Assistance is also available via email at cons.tehran@mea.gov.in.
