Crisis of waste disposal in Srinagar, Jammu

The policymakers and administrators in the housing and urban development department in Jammu & Kashmir are yet to come to terms with the fastly increasing demands of solid waste management disposal systems even in twin capital cities in Srinagar and Jammu as authorities turn a blind eye to the public outcry over the incompletion of solid waste management initiatives taken up for execution years ago. Though Smart Cities Mission for Srinagar and Jammu had generated hopes of timely execution of the initiatives taken up for waste management disposal system presently in shambles in both the twin capital cities but the proposed works started years ago are not nearing to completion even now. Priorities for time bound completion of the solid waste management disposal projects for a new urban development approach are yet to be fixed and resultantly the delay caused in the implementation of such works is intensifying the crisis of waste management disposal in the twin capital cities and major towns across Jammu & Kashmir. The administrators and the elected corporators of the municipal corporations in both Srinagar and Jammu need to pursue a new approach to seek win-win solutions for the resolution of the issues standing at the core of difficulties in the fast track execution of waste management disposal projects. Srinagar city generating 450 metric tons solid waste had though conceived the idea of the installation of a waste-to-energy project at Achin dumping site in the outskirt of Srinagar but the idea is till now reduced to just paper work and consequently the idea of generating five megawatt power by installation of this project is unlikely to come true even in coming years.
The dream project handed over to a consortium of three companies has already missed the deadline of 18 months set for the completion of the project by none else than the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The completion of this waste disposal management project would have though led to its launch in Jammu city and most of the towns across Jammu & Kashmir but the unprecedented delay caused in the completion of project is intensifying the crisis of solid waste management in both Srinagar and Jammu .The administrators and planners in the municipal corporations of the twin capital cities not taking initiatives to mitigate the crisis of solid waste disposal management system owe too many explanation to the people for the delay caused in the timely completion of energy efficient solid waste management disposal projects in both Srinagar and Jammu as delay over such project could trigger public health problems.
