Shutdown, restrictions on Bhurhan’s third death anniversary cripples normal life in valley

Srinagar: A complete shutdown called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani the Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq the Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman and Mohammad Yaseen Malik the incarcerated JKLF Chairman on the third death anniversary of slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani hit normal life on Monday accross Kashmir . Law enforcing authorities imposed restrictions in parts of the Srinagar city and other restive parts of Kashmir valley to thwart attempts in several violence prone areas of valley.
Reports said Shops, public transport, other businesses and educational institutions remained closed in Srinagar city and other parts of the valley. The authorities officially announced the suspension of class work in schools and colleges accross Kashmir. Restrictions remained in force in parts of the Srinagar city and other places in the valley with police and paramilitaries keeping an extra vigil over the movement of the people to prevent protests on the death anniversary of Hizbul commander, Burhan Wani. While mobile internet services were suspended in most parts of the valley, the advance movement of amarnath yatris was also put on hold.No movement of Amarnath Yatris was allowed from winter capital Jammu towards the Valley on day keeping in view the law and order situation. Low intensity movement of private vehicles was reported on some of the arterial routes in Srinagar and few other areas in some other districts.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising of Syed Ali Geelani the Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq the Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman and Mohammad Yasin Malik the incarcerated Chairman JKLF had called for a valley-wide protest shutdown on the third death anniversary of Wani.
Burhan was killed in a gunfight with government forces on 8 July, 2016, in Kokernag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. His killing triggered massive protests and a prolonged period of curfews and shutdowns across the valley. Over a period of more than four months, more than hundred people were killed and thousand others injured in clashes between the government forces and protestors.
