JK SCPWCR observes Int’l Women’s Day at Majalta Jammu

Jammu : Jammu & Kashmir State Commission for Protection of Women and Child Rights (JKSCPWCR) in collaboration with Government Degree College Majalta, Friday organized a function here to mark International Women’s Day (IWD).
Highlighting the importance of the day, Special Secretary, Social Welfare Department Rifat Arif, who was chief guest on the occasion, said the day is observed to honour the women who have contributed remarkably to the society, to show solidarity with those fighting for gender equality and bring to light those women who have contributed a lot for the society and passed unnoticed.
She informed that the Government has launched one-Stop facility for women and girls to seek justice against violence and any other forms of harassment. She said aggrieved women or any other person on behalf of her can register the case for seeking medical, transport or legal assistance in her favour. One-Stop Centre facility has been established in 9 districts of the State and rest of the districts would be covered very soon under the scheme, she added.
She further informed that the government is going to establish Mahila Shakti Kendras in each district to empower the rural women by imparting them Skill Development training to live with dignity.
Giving an overview of the history of International Women’s Day, Member of the Commission, Dr Kavita Suri threw light on the historic events which saw the women across the globe demanding their rights including suffrage, the movement and demand for their voting rights.
Referring to the campaign theme for the day, College Principal, Prof C L Shivgotra said gender equality is imperative for harmonious development of the society. He said education of the women is a strong tool with the help of which transformation in society can be brought.
Earlier, Secretary, J&K Commission for Protection of Women and Child Rights, Lal Chand dwelt in detail about the functioning of the Commission. He said the Commission has the mandate to champion the cause of women and child rights.
Among others present were faculty members, local women and a large number of students of the college.
