Srinagar/Feb, 25: National Conference vice president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday warned against attempts to tinker with Article 35 A, likely to come up for the hearing before the Supreme Court this week.
Addressing the party workers at Nawa-e-Subh in Srinagar, Omar warned that the situation will become worse than Arunachal Pradesh if attempts were made to tinker with Article 35 A.
Violence in Arunachal Pradesh capital Itanagar began on Thursday as a protest against the probability of granting Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) to members of six communities.
A protester has died of a bullet wound after firing by security forces, houses of ministers have been attacked, public vehicles burnt, media personnel on duty threatened, and offices of powerful student organisations like All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) set on fire during the violence.
Omar accused the Centre of threatening people of Jammu and Kashmir over Article 35A.
“I want to tell the Centre to check the situation in Arunachal Pradesh. There is no militancy or stone-pelting in Aruncchal Pradesh. Today, the state has been set on fire by fiddling with the Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC),” he said.
“Today, they have made amendments to the PRC and the situation has become so bad that people there have set fire to the house of deputy chief minister. If you fiddle with Article 35A the situation will become even worse in Kashmir,” he warned.
