Srinagar-Jammu highway shut for second consecutive day, weather to improve from Friday

Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu highway continued to remain shut for second consecutive day on Thursday as fresh landslides triggered by the fresh snowing on many places in Ramban area disrupted the efforts of restoring the traffic on the highway,said the traffic officials overseeing the movement of vehicular traffic on the highway saying that no traffic will be allowed on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on Thursday due to fresh landslides after fresh snowing in the stone shooting areas of Ramban district the traffic officials said that slippery condition of the road from in Banihal area is also a major difficulty in the efforts of the restoration of the traffic on the highway. Meanwhile MeT department has said that weather is likely to improve from Friday onwards.
Clarifying that the clearance of the stranded vehicles on the highway as and when the traffic is restored on the highway the traffic officials said any decision to resume the traffic movement on the highway will be taken keeping in view the safety of the travelers on the road.
The decision to suspend traffic on the strategic highway was taken after the Met on Wednesday issued advisory of rain and snowfall in the state.
Assessing the weather and road condition, vehicular traffic was suspended early on Thursday.
The highway which is the lifeline of essential supplies for the landlocked Kashmir Valley, has remained closed for over a dozen days in January due to landslides and snowfall along the nearly 300-kilometre long road.
Meanwhile Meteorological department in Srinagar said that weather may improve from Friday onwards.
