Kupwara/ Jan,27: A complete shutdown on the anniversary of the killing of 27 persons called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani the Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq the Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman and Mohammad Yaseen Malik the JKLF Chairaman, on Sunday hit normal in north Kashmir’s Kupwara town .
All the private business establishments and shops remained closed while public transport was off from the roads. Law enforcing authorities have deployed heavy contingent of police and paramilitary troopers in strength to maintain peace and order in the town.
It may be recalled here that on 27 January 1994, 27 persons were killed in army firing in Kupwara town. The survivors had claimed that the massacre was carried out by the soldiers to punish the people for observing shutdown on January 26 (India’s Republic Day).
