Srinagar: A complete shutdown against the killing of a civilian Thursday this week in Qamarwari area in the outskirts of Srinagar hit normal life on Friday across Kashmir as the law enforcing authorities once again barred congregational Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta Srinagar after house detaining Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and arresting JKLF chairman Yasin Malik in the wee hours.
Reports received from Srinagar city and major towns in Kashmir valley particularly district headquarters reported that total shutdown hit normal life in all the districts as students didn’t turn up for attendance in schools and colleges.
Law enforcing authorities barred congregational Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta Srinagar as Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was already house detained and Yasin Malik arrested in the wee hours on Friday to prevent them from leading protests against the killings, arrests and Cordon and Search Operations across Kashmir.
Taking to micro blogging social networking website Twitter, Mirwaiz wrote, “cycle of state killing and repression continues. Muslims barred for the second consecutive week and fifteenth this year from offering Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid, leadership and activists placed under detention, CASO continues. Meanwhile state claims establishing democracy at grass root level.”
All shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained shut and passenger traffic was off the roads across Kashmir. The streets wore a deserted look as heavy contingents of police and paramilitary CRPF deployed in sensitive places continued to keep a vigil on the movement of the people to prevent protests called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik against the killing of a civilian in Qamarwari Srinagar, arrests of pro-freedom leaders and activists ahead of civic polls and nonstop Cordon and Search Operations (CASO) across Kashmir.
In Banihal on Srinagar Jammu highway also a complete shutdown in response to call for shutdown by JRL hit normal life. Even train service was suspended and attendance of employees in government offices was almost negligible and the government working was almost collapsed in both the summer capital Srinagar and district and tehsil headquarters.
