Villagers on Baramulla-Handwara road stage demo against water shortage, disrupt traffic movement

Baramula,/Aug 16 : Residents of Chalkoo area of Baramulla in north Kashmir on Thursday staged a protest demonstration on Baramulla – Handwara Road against the acute water shortage.

Reports said residents of the Chalkoo village on Thursday took to streets and blocked Baramulla – Handwara road and shouted slogans against PHE department for its failure to maintain regular water supply and ignoring their sufferings in the absence of proper water supply.

The protesting residents while talking to kashmir Horizon said ‘to deal with water shortage especially during this hot and humid weather  is a difficult task. Most of the time our women flock have to travel to a larger distance for fetching portable drinking water’

“Our area has been grappling with the water crisis since past one week which has now reached an intolerable point” a group of Women flock who were protesting told Kashmir Horizon.

The protesters said that they are forced to fetch the contaminated water from streams.They alleged that matter has been brought to the notice of the concerned authorities but no improvement has been witnessed.

Meanwhile AEE PHE Baramulla Division Ab Qayoom when contacted told Kashmir Horizon that a water service line was damaged by R&B department when they were carrying out a developmental work in the area, adding that a team of PHE department has been sent to the area and  water supply will be restored soon.
