Srinagar/May,7: Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq was detained and detained at Police Station Nigeen on Monday.
Reports said Mirwaiz after he defied house arrest and tried to march towards the civil secretariat in Srinagar against Sunday’s civilian killings in Shopian.“A police party stationed there detained him and lodged him at Nigeen police station,” said a spokesman.
Five civilians were killed after government forces fired into the protesters in Shopian district last Sunday. The Joint Resistance Leadership, comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, had called for a peaceful sit-in outside the secretariat Monday.
Before his arrest, Mirwaiz appealed all sections of the society to co-operate with the leadership.Earlier in the day, senior Hurriyat leader Hilal War was arrested at Maisuma after he tried to march towards the secretariat. He was lodged at Kothi Bagh police station.
