Srinagar : The Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Mathematics at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Monday jointly hosted an engaging guest lecture titled “Advances in Computational Fluid Dynamics: From Mesoscale Modelling to Real-World Engineering Applications.”
The session was led by Prof. Dhiraj V. Patil, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad. The Director of NIT Srinagar, Prof. Anurag Misra, graced the event as the chief guest. During the lecture, Prof. Patil delved into innovative computational techniques that help us understand and simulate the complexities of fluid flow, showcasing their significance in contemporary engineering. He covered a range of topics, including mesoscale modelling, particle-based methods like the Lattice Boltzmann Method and the Discrete Element Method (DEM), as well as thermal and multiphase fluid flows, non-Newtonian fluids, turbulence, and high-speed flows. The session underscored the increasing importance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in tackling intricate engineering challenges, crafting predictive models, and connecting theoretical concepts with real-world applications. It also highlighted how computational methods are relevant across various fields, including civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering. In his address, Prof. Misra praised the initiative and stressed the value of expert lectures and interdisciplinary collaboration in enhancing research, technical education, and academic partnerships at the institute. The program offered faculty members, researchers, and students a valuable chance to explore the latest advancements in computational modelling and numerical simulation, fostering a rich exchange of knowledge between the participating departments and the invited expert. Prof. J. A. Bhat, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, and Dr. Zamrooda Jabeen, Head and Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, were also present at the event, along with Dr. Vivek, Assistant Professor (CED), and others.
