New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani was admitted to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Friday evening due to a chest infection, according to media reports.
The 98-year-old leader was brought to the hospital at around 7.30 pm and admitted to the pulmonary department, where a team of specialist doctors is monitoring his condition.
Hospital officials said Advani’s condition was stable and that he remained under observation.
Further details about his treatment and the expected duration of his hospital stay were not immediately available.
One of the key figures behind the BJP’s emergence as a major political force in India, Advani served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004 in the government led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He also held the portfolios of union Home Minister and served as BJP president during a significant phase of the party’s organisational expansion and growing national influence.
Born on November 8, 1927, Advani played a prominent role in shaping the BJP’s political direction and organisational structure over several decades.
His political journey included the party’s expansion beyond its traditional strongholds and its emergence as a central force in national politics.
He gradually withdrew from active electoral politics in his later years. In recognition of his contribution to public life, Advani was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2024.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who acknowledged the veteran leader’s long association with Indian public life.
Advani’s hospitalisation has drawn attention to the health of the veteran politician, who remains an important figure in the BJP’s history.
