Authorities Directed To Formulate Comprehensive Policy
Srinagar | October, 15: The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has banned fuel-powered motorboats and jet skis on Dal Lake until further orders, directing the administration to frame a comprehensive policy balancing environmental conservation and tourism.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Dr Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Justice Rajesh Sekhri instructed the Lakes Conservation and Management Authority, Tourism Department, and Police to strictly enforce the ban. The court warned that any violation would amount to contempt, though boats used for emergency services, disaster management, and law and order remain exempted.
The order followed a petition raising concerns over the environmental degradation of Dal Lake and the lack of transparent licensing criteria for motorized craft. Senior Additional Advocate General Mohsin S. Qadri assured the court that authorities are committed to scientific, expert-oriented solutions. The Bench observed that solar-powered and electric boats could serve as sustainable alternatives and directed the government to submit an expert-backed policy proposal. The court scheduled the next hearing for October 30, 2026.
