Srinagar : Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Dr. Basharat Qayoom, who is also the Chief Executive Officer, Srinagar

Smart City Limited (SSCL), Wednesday chaired a review meeting to assess compliance with the directions issued by the Multi-Disciplinary Committee (MDC) concerning traffic management, road infrastructure and urban mobility in Srinagar.

The meeting was convened to review progress on actionable points arising from the MDC directions, identify issues requiring intervention, and ensure coordinated compliance.

The meeting was attended by the Joint Commissioner, R&E, SMC/Additional Chief Executive Officer, SSCL; Chief Engineer, SSCL; Joint Commissioner, Works, SMC; General Manager, Public Transport Operations (PTO), SSCL; Executive Engineer, City Roads, SMC; Executive Engineer, SSCL; and General Manager, Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), SSCL.

During the meeting, a comprehensive review was undertaken of key traffic management issues under the MDC framework, with particular emphasis on traffic congestion, road infrastructure, junction improvements, traffic circulation, road-user safety, inter-agency coordination and the effective utilisation of technology-driven solutions to improve urban mobility.

The deliberations also focused on strengthening IT-based parking management systems, developing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, establishing an effective Traffic Control Room, and systematically developing and upgrading bus stops to ensure organised parking, promote sustainable mobility, enhance real-time traffic monitoring, and improve public transport infrastructure across Srinagar.

The Commissioner emphasised the importance of ensuring effective and timely compliance with MDC directions through coordinated efforts, clearly defined responsibilities and result-oriented interventions. The discussions focused on identifying existing gaps, addressing operational challenges and formulating practical measures to streamline traffic movement and improve the overall efficiency of the city’s transport network.

Special emphasis was laid on strengthening the utilisation of Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS), real-time surveillance, Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) infrastructure and other smart mobility interventions to facilitate efficient traffic monitoring, improved junction management and better coordination among the concerned agencies.

The meeting underscored the need for a structured, coordinated and accountable approach towards implementing MDC directions, ensuring that identified traffic management challenges are addressed through effective planning, institutional coordination and technology-enabled solutions.

The initiative reflects the commitment of SMC and SSCL towards ensuring compliance with MDC directions while strengthening traffic management mechanisms, promoting sustainable transport solutions, improving road safety and facilitating safer, smoother and more efficient movement for residents and commuters across Srinagar.
