UCC to be implemented across country including J&K: BJP
Srinagar | October, 12: Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sunil Kumar Sharma on Monday termed the alleged rigging of the 1987 Assembly elections as the biggest case of vote theft in the country, saying the Abdullah family must answer questions surrounding the polls that brought Farooq Abdullah to power.
Speaking to reporters, Sharma alleged that the 1987 elections remained a symbol of electoral malpractice. “If the allegation of vote theft is to be placed on someone, it is on the 1987 rigging. Farooq Abdullah became Chief Minister after votes were allegedly stolen,” he said. He also referred to a former district commissioner, claiming legislators elected during that period were popularly known as “Khaliq-made MLAs.”
Targeting the Congress for past electoral practices, Sharma claimed that elections held under former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi were conducted fairly. Reacting to the INDIA bloc’s campaign on electoral irregularities, he questioned its criticism of electronic voting machines (EVMs) after opposition parties had actively participated in elections under the same system.
Referring to earlier statements by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praising the conduct of polls in Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma asked opposition leaders to clarify their position. While acknowledging the right to protest, he criticized road blockades, emphasizing that public life, school commutes, and emergency services should not be disrupted.
Responding to Farooq Abdullah’s remarks that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would never be enforced in Kashmir, Sharma asserted that the UCC would be implemented across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.
