Enhancement Subject to High Court Assessment of Judicial Officers’ Fitness, Eligibility, Suitability, Performance

Srinagar | October, 6: In a significant move, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved the enhancement of the superannuation age of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years, subject to assessment by the High Court of J&K and Ladakh.
According to an order issued by the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the competent authority accorded sanction following recommendations made by the Full Court of the High Court on August 10, 2026. The Full Court resolved that the retirement age of judicial officers in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh be raised, provided such officers are found fit and eligible for continued service beyond the age of 60. Necessary amendments in the relevant rules will be undertaken in consultation with the High Court. Officials noted that this decision follows earlier directions from the Supreme Court, which had instructed States and Union Territories to decide on enhancing the retirement age of judicial officers in consultation with their respective High Courts.
