Srinagar, Sept 23 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday launched a sharp counterattack on the BJP over its remarks concerning National Conference founder late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, questioning the party’s historical record and accusing it of attempting to reshape history to suit its narrative.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, Omar said those who had not participated in the freedom struggle had no basis to lecture others on it.
“Those who did not take part in the fight for freedom, what lesson will they teach us?” he said.
Referring to the RSS and the political formation that preceded the BJP, Omar said their role during the freedom struggle was well known.
“Everyone knows who apologised, who did what. No one can forget the role of the RSS,” the Chief Minister said.
Omar also defended the National Conference’s political legacy, highlighting what he described as the sacrifices made by the party in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The sacrifices made by the National Conference… the sacrifice started with the National Conference,” he said.
Taking aim at the BJP’s approach to history, Omar said the party sought to reinterpret the past whenever it disagreed with a particular account.
“When they don’t like something, they try to present history in a new way. They tried in this too,” he said.
“The Chief Minister said the National Conference would continue to put forward its position”.Omar added
