Jammu, 18/ September/ 2026: All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC), a registered organisation working for panchayats and local bodies in J&K, will launch an MLA Reach-Out Programme during the upcoming session of the J&K Legislative Assembly, beginning 21 September, to seek support for holding panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest.
The announcement was made by AJKPC President Anil Sharma after a brief meeting with Jammu-based office bearers of the organisation.
During the assembly session, different delegations of AJKPC will meet MLAs from different political parties and discuss the issue of pending panchayat elections with them.
These delegations of AJKPC will also seek meetings with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, the Deputy Chief Minister and the Speaker of the J&K Legislative Assembly, besides other legislature party leaders.
The AJKPC President said that panchayat bodies in J&K have remained vacant for nearly two years and there are no elected panchayat representatives at present.
It is pertinent to mention that both urban and rural local bodies in J&K are presently vacant and elections to these bodies are long overdue.
The organisation will request legislators to raise the issue in the Assembly and support the demand for starting the panchayat election process at the earliest.
Sharma said that panchayat elections are an important issue concerning people at the village level and should not be seen in political terms. He said AJKPC will meet leaders and MLAs of all parties and seek their support for early panchayat elections.
He also urged the government to announce a clear timeline and start the process for holding panchayat elections without further delay.
