Srinagar : Doctors have stressed the need for timely diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and high-quality therapies to tackle India’s growing diabetes burden.
India has more than 100 million adults living with diabetes, with the number projected to cross 150 million by 2050, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
Dr Shariq Masoodi, Consultant Endocrinologist, Srinagar, said diabetes care must go beyond blood sugar control, noting that GLP-1 receptor agonists have emerged as an important advancement in managing type 2 diabetes, including weight management and cardiovascular and kidney risk reduction.
Dr Bashir Laway, Consultant Endocrinologist, Srinagar, said quality is particularly important for complex peptide-based therapies. He stressed the role of recombinant DNA technology, precision manufacturing and clinical evidence in ensuring consistent and reliable treatment.
Experts noted that type 2 diabetes often develops at a younger age among Indians and carries a high risk of cardiovascular and kidney complications. They said expanding access to effective therapies should be accompanied by responsible prescribing, physician-led care and patient education.
