Rain brings respite, more showers likely across J&K

Jammu records 66 mm rainfall; Udhampur 56 mm, Poonch 45 mm and Kukernag 42 mm

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir received significant rainfall during the past 24 hours, with Jammu recording the highest precipitation of 66 mm, while the Meteorological Department forecast intermittent rain and thundershowers across the Union Territory over the coming days.
Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar said that during the past 24 hours, rainfall was witnessed in many of J&K. Udhampur recorded 56 mm of rainfall, followed by Poonch with 45 mm, Kukernag 42 mm and Qazigund 32.6 mm during the 24-hour period.
He said, on 24 Aug, the weather department forecast generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places. Brief intense showers were likely at one or two districts of the Jammu division till late afternoon, followed by improvement in weather conditions.
From August 25 to 28, Jammu and Kashmir is expected to experience generally hot and humid weather, with brief spells of rain or thundershowers likely at scattered places, particularly during the early morning and afternoon hours.
The weather is expected to remain generally hot and humid from August 29 to 31 as well. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at scattered to many places, with brief intense showers expected during the early morning and afternoon hours, mainly in the Jammu division, he added.
Meanwhile, the department has cautioned that brief but intense showers at localised places could trigger flash floods, mudslides and landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Residents in areas prone to flooding and landslides have been advised to remain alert during intense rainfall spells and follow local advisories. Farmers have been advised that they may continue harvesting and other agricultural operations, while keeping local weather conditions in view.
