Sovereign Cloud technology Matters for citizens

Srinagar : As India’s digital economy expands, the need for secure and locally governed cloud infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. Cloud technology enables organisations to store, process and access data through remote servers housed in secure data centres, supporting everything from digital payments and healthcare to government services and business applications.

With rising cyber threats, including spam, phishing and online fraud, stronger data protection has become critical. Airtel’s AI-powered anti-spam system has identified more than 93 billion spam calls and four billion spam messages, while blocking over 1.4 million fraudulent links.

A sovereign cloud ensures that data, infrastructure and cloud operations remain within a country’s legal and regulatory jurisdiction. For India, this provides greater control over sensitive information, including metadata, backups, encryption keys and access permissions. The approach is particularly significant for banking, healthcare, taxation, defence, government and critical infrastructure. Airtel launched Airtel Cloud through Xtelify in August 2025, describing it as India’s first sovereign, telco-grade cloud platform by a telecom operator. Built on Airtel’s data centres and nationwide network, the platform offers 99.99% uptime, geo-redundancy, disaster recovery, immutable backups and continuous data replication. With IaaS, PaaS and GenAI-enabled services, Airtel Cloud is positioned as a locally governed platform for mission-critical workloads, reflecting India’s growing focus on secure, resilient and sovereign digital infrastructure.
