Srinagar : In a major breakthrough ending a 35-year manhunt, the Government Railway Police (GRP) Jammu has arrested Altaf Hussain Sheikh, an alleged absconder wanted in connection with the deadly 1991 Jammu railway station bomb blast.
According to a police statement issued here on Thursday investigators tracked down Sheikh to Marhama-Bijbehara in Anantnag district after a relentless two-year operation that involved meticulous scrutiny of identity documents and residential records. For decades, the accused had evaded justice by living under a concealed identity, seamlessly integrating into society as a successful local businessman.
The high-profile arrest stems from the April 2, 1991 terror attack on Platform No. 1, which tragically killed three people—including two paramilitary personnel—and injured 18 civilians. Sheikh, who was formally declared an absconder alongside two others following the initial investigation, faces severe charges under the RPC, TADA, and the Explosive Substances Act. Produced before the TADA Court on August 13, 2026, for legal proceedings, his capture marks a decisive victory for the GRP as they continue to hunt down the remaining fugitives.
