Srinagar : The Allama Iqbal Library at the University of Kashmir on Wednesday organized a one-day capacity-building program for Library and Information Science professionals, themed “Smart Libraries, Skilled Librarians, and Smiling Users,” coinciding with National Librarians’ Day.
The initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge of library professionals regarding emerging practices in library services, focusing on technology integration, evolving user expectations, and the necessary professional skills for modern library management. It also served as a forum for discussion among LIS professionals, students, and scholars about the future of library services. During the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the importance of continuous skill development for librarians in response to technological advancements and changing user behaviors. She highlighted that modern libraries are defined not only by their resources and technology but also by the competencies of the professionals who facilitate access to knowledge. Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, noted that technological innovations have transformed information access and sharing, underscoring the necessity of professional training in contemporary library services. Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal reiterated the significance of libraries within the academic framework of the University, stressing the need for their services to adapt to the requirements of students, researchers, and faculty. Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Lone, Librarian of AIL, outlined the program’s objectives, pointing out that the evolving information landscape necessitates the development of new competencies among LIS professionals in areas such as digital services and user engagement. The program included expert sessions and interactive discussions on various topics, including smart library technologies and user-centric services, and was well-attended by library professionals, students, and scholars in the field.
