Srinagar :   The Departments of Paediatrics and Community Medicine at Kashmir Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) organized an awareness program to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week, emphasizing the critical role of breastfeeding in promoting the health of both infants and mothers.

The event was attended by key figures from the institution, including the Managing Director, Tausif Ahmad, who underscored the necessity of increasing awareness among mothers regarding the benefits of breastfeeding, particularly in urban areas where reluctance persists. Dr. Qazi Iqbal, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, advocated for immediate initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods for up to two years or beyond. He highlighted that breast milk is essential for newborn nutrition, offering protection against infections and various childhood illnesses, and referred to it as a baby’s first vaccine. The medical professionals present noted that exclusive breastfeeding significantly lowers the risk of malnutrition and common childhood diseases, while also enhancing cognitive development and long-term health outcomes. They pointed out the health benefits for mothers, including quicker recovery post-childbirth and reduced risks of certain cancers. The program emphasized the importance of community support in fostering a conducive environment for breastfeeding. A special presentation during the event focused on the scientific benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and the theme of World Breastfeeding Week, encouraging mothers to adopt this practice. The program concluded with an interactive session aimed at discussing strategies to enhance breastfeeding awareness, dispel myths, and strengthen community support, reaffirming KMCH’s commitment to maternal and child health through education and preventive healthcare initiatives.
