Dozens Rescued in Shopian,NH-44 Blocked, MeT Issues 5-Day Alert
Srinagar :Two people died as cloudbursts and torrential rains hit Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, triggering flash floods that damaged roads, bridges, homes, and farmland, while forcing the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).
Reports said that in North Kashmir, Naseema Begum died in a Kupwara cloudburst and Murtaza Bashir drowned in Baramulla. Shopian suffered severe damage as floodwaters inundated homes in Badrhama, prompting the SDRF to rescue 80 residents, including students. Additional cloudbursts damaged infrastructure in Pahalgam, Bandipora, and Ganderbal, alongside severe orchard damage in Ladakh’s Kargil district and a successful SDRF boat rescue on Dal Lake. The MeT department warns of continued heavy rainfall and potential landslides over the next five days, urging extreme caution near water bodies.
