Srinagar, Aug 1: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, remained closed for all types of traffic on Saturday as restoration work continued amid heavy rainfall and fresh incidents of shooting stones and mudslides.
According to the Traffic Police, restoration work on the single carriageway is underway near Dawal Bridge in the Samroli area of Udhampur district.
Officials said heavy rain is continuing in the Ramban sector, while multiple incidents of shooting stones and mudslides have been reported from Ramban and Banihal, hampering road clearance efforts.
They said the highway remains unsafe for vehicular movement as the road surface is highly slushy, muddy and extremely slippery. NHAI personnel, along with Traffic Police teams and machinery, are on the job to restore traffic on the affected stretch.
The Traffic Police has advised commuters not to undertake travel on NH-44 until the highway is cleared and declared safe for traffic.
People have also been urged not to pay heed to rumours and to verify the latest highway status through the Traffic Police’s official social media platforms and Traffic Control Units (TCUs).
