Srinagar : The Centre for Biodiversity & Taxonomy at the University of Kashmir has organised a three-day workshop focused on the rehabilitation of alpine grasslands in the Western Himalaya.
Th event, held in collaboration with several esteemed institutions and sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, aims to foster dialogue among scientists, policymakers, forest managers, and local communities regarding the conservation and restoration of these vital ecosystems. The workshop emphasizes the need for evidence-based strategies to enhance biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystem management, while also encouraging community participation in restoring fragile mountain landscapes. During the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan underscored the importance of collaboration among academic institutions, government bodies, and local communities in addressing ecological challenges. She highlighted the role of universities in generating scientific knowledge that informs environmental policies and promotes sustainable resource management. Mr. Tawheed Ahmad Deva, the Regional Wildlife Warden, stressed the necessity of community involvement for the long-term conservation of Himalayan biodiversity amidst growing environmental pressures. Additionally, the Dean of Research and the Head of the Department of Botany acknowledged the significance of interdisciplinary research in tackling ecological issues. The workshop is structured to include expert lectures, training sessions, technical presentations, and interactive discussions, all aimed at exploring the ecological importance of alpine grasslands and developing practical rehabilitation approaches through scientific research and stakeholder engagement.
