Water level falls at Sangam, Pampore and Ram Munshi Bagh; Asham, Wular show slight rise but remain below warning levels; forecaster warns of heavy rain, flash flood risk
Srinagar, July 24 (KNO): Water levels in the River Jhelum continued to recede at key gauge stations, including Sangam, Pampore and Ram Munshi Bagh, on Friday morning, even as the river remained above the flood declaration mark at Ram Munshi Bagh.
According to the latest gauge reading of the Irrigation & Flood Control (I&FC) Department, accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh stood at 19.07 feet and was on a declining trend, remaining above the flood declaration mark of 18 feet but below the danger mark of 21 feet.
The data showed that Sangam was recorded at 18.89 feet, while Pampore stood at 5.13 metres, with both stations also registering a decreasing trend.
Asham and Wular recorded a slight increase in water levels but continued to remain below their respective flood declaration marks. Among the tributaries, Vishow Nallah was rising, while Rambiyara and Sindh were receding. Lidder and Doodhganga remained stable.
The I&FC Department continued to monitor the situation, while authorities advised people, particularly those living near riverbanks and embankments, to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
Meanwhile, independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng told KNO that rainfall is likely across parts of the Jammu region on Friday, particularly over the Chenab Valley districts, Udhampur, Jammu, Samba and Kathua.
He said South Kashmir is expected to be the most affected in the Valley. “Generally, most places are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, while a few locations may experience heavy showers,” he said.
Faizan said the weather activity is expected to continue until the afternoon before gradually easing. However, scattered showers may persist in some areas till evening.
“Intense showers cannot be ruled out. Therefore, the risk of flash floods will continue,” he added.—(KNO)
