Smart Meters, Dumb Outages: Kashmir’s New Summer Vibe

Srinagar: In a stunning twist of modern economics, the great J&K mutton crisis has officially ended, but your wallet’s funeral has just begun. After intense administrative sweat, Punjab authorities graciously stopped charging “unauthorized transit fees” on livestock trucks. The highway to the Valley is finally unhindered, yet somehow, the price of mutton successfully completed its own high-altitude climb from ₹740 to a sleek ₹800 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, the elected government—now sailing smoothly into its second year—remains comfortably locked in a meditative state of inaction. When asked why the historic, seven-decade-old enforcement wings of the Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department have suddenly gone into early retirement, the official shrug is legendary: “Sorry, the law expired in 2022!”
Apparently, drafting a fresh bill to regulate the skyrocketing prices of essential goods like meat, chicken, eggs, and vegetables requires an amount of legislative calorie-burning that this government just can’t afford. Until they find a pen to write a new law, the consumers will continue to buy their vegetables like precious gems and treat mutton like a luxury property investment. Bon appétit!
