Srinagar: The first phase of Census 2027, namely the House Listing Operations (HLO), has been successfully completed across the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, marking a significant milestone .
The meeting besides the Director, Census Operations, J&K and Ladakh was attended by Commissioner Secretary, H&UDD; Commissioner Secretary, Education; DG, Planning and other senior officers from the Department of Census Operations.
During the meeting chaired Chief Secretary lauded the significant progress made in the first phase of Census 2027, highlighting the efforts of the Directorate of Census Operations and various stakeholders. The Chief Secretary urged all departments to maintain momentum and cooperation for the successful completion of subsequent phases. Amit Sharma, the Chief Principal Census Officer, provided a detailed review of the field operations, noting the successful execution of House Listing Operations from June 1 to June 30, 2026, which utilized a fully digital and paperless approach. The operations involved the creation of 24,071 House Listing Blocks across 295 Census Charges in Jammu & Kashmir, supported by extensive training for over 29,000 personnel. To ensure effective fieldwork, more than 27,000 digital Census kits were distributed, with additional reserves for contingencies. The meeting emphasized the importance of timely honorarium payments to field staff and outlined future activities, including the preparation of District Census Handbooks, which will compile essential demographic and socio-economic data. Looking ahead, preparations for the Population Enumeration in snow-bound areas are set to begin, with training for field personnel scheduled to conclude by the end of August. The number of identified snow-bound areas has significantly increased, with 1,103 villages and three municipal areas designated for advance enumeration, enhancing coverage of remote regions before winter.
