New Delhi: BJP leaders paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 73rd death anniversary, stating that the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir fulfilled his lifelong vision. Mookerjee died under detention in Srinagar on June 23, 1953, after being arrested during his campaign against the entry permit system, asserting that Kashmir was an integral part of India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Mookerjee as a distinguished patriot, scholar, and statesman, posting on X that his sacrifice remains etched in the nation’s memory and continues to inspire generations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking at a function in New Delhi, called June 23 an inspiring day that marked Mookerjee’s sacrifice for the principle of “one nation, one constitution”. Shah recalled Mookerjee’s march to Kashmir without a permit, where he opposed separate constitutional arrangements and raised a slogan against having two constitutions, two flags, and two prime ministers in one country. BJP president Nitin Nabin also offered floral tributes at the party headquarters, stating that the removal of Article 370 was a major step toward fulfilling Mookerjee’s goal of complete integration, and that the work being done under PM Modi’s leadership is the true tribute to his nationalist ideology.
