PM Modi welcomes US-Iran understanding, hopes it restores stability in West Asia

New Delhi, Jun 15 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end hostilities in West Asia, expressing hope that the breakthrough would help restore peace and stability in a region that has witnessed weeks of conflict, economic disruption and loss of life.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi said India viewed the development positively and looked forward to the remaining issues being resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” the Prime Minister said.

He added that India hoped the implementation of the understanding would contribute to regional stability and safeguard critical trade routes. “India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also stressed the need for a durable settlement of outstanding issues between Washington and Tehran. “We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” he added.

Modi’s remarks came after the United States and Iran announced a breakthrough understanding aimed at halting hostilities that had escalated tensions across West Asia and raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

According to reports, the two sides are expected to formalise the agreement in Geneva later this week, with negotiations continuing on several unresolved political and security issues.

The conflict had triggered significant volatility in global energy markets, disrupted commercial shipping routes and heightened concerns over the security of key maritime corridors, including those crucial for international trade and oil supplies. Several countries had repeatedly called for restraint and urged both sides to pursue diplomacy to prevent further escalation.

For India, stability in West Asia remains a strategic priority given the region’s importance as a major source of energy supplies, a key destination for Indian exports and home to a large Indian diaspora. New Delhi has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of resolving regional disputes while emphasizing the need to maintain freedom of navigation and uninterrupted commerce through vital sea lanes.

India had earlier expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the region and monitored developments closely due to their potential impact on global economic stability, energy prices and the welfare of Indian citizens living and working across West Asia.

Modi’s statement places India among a growing number of countries that have welcomed the US-Iran understanding, while underscoring New Delhi’s hope that the breakthrough will evolve into a comprehensive and lasting agreement capable of securing long-term peace and stability in the region.
