NCM-funded progto bring experts from IIT Jammu, IIT Kanpur, IIT Mandi
Srinagar: The Department of Mathematics at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar is set to host a two-week Instructional School for Teachers focused on “Theoretical and Numerical Aspects of PDEs: Application to Flow Dynamics” from June 29 to July 11, 2026.
The initiative aims to gather leading experts and academicians from top institutions across India, with funding provided by the National Centre for Mathematics (NCM) under its Advanced Training in Mathematics (ATM) Schools initiative. The program will take place at the NIT Srinagar campus and is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), covering both theoretical foundations and numerical solution techniques, particularly in the context of complex fluid dynamics. Dr. Atendra Kumar, the program’s convenor, emphasized the importance of PDEs in addressing various physical phenomena and engineering challenges, highlighting topics such as solution existence, uniqueness, stability, and advanced computational modeling techniques.
Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, Director of NIT Srinagar, noted the institute’s commitment to fostering a robust academic environment through high-quality programs. He remarked that the NCM-funded school reflects NIT Srinagar’s growing academic reputation and its dedication to enhancing research and capacity building in mathematical sciences. Prof. Atikur Rahman, the Registrar, added that the school would strengthen academic networks and research capabilities among faculty and young researchers. Dr. Zamrooda Jabeen, Head of the Department of Mathematics, described the program as a significant milestone, emphasizing the role of PDEs in modern scientific computing and mathematical modeling. The instructional school will feature lectures and interactive sessions led by distinguished faculty from institutions such as IIT Kanpur, IIT Mandi, and IIT Jammu, covering classical theories of second-order PDEs and modern numerical techniques like finite difference and finite element methods. A key focus will be on flow dynamics and structural bifurcation analysis, particularly in understanding recirculation zones and vortex shedding phenomena in fluid flow past bluff bodies. The curriculum is structured to address contemporary challenges in scientific computing and engineering research, making it relevant for university and postgraduate mathematics programs. The approval of this school under the NCM-ATM program is viewed as a significant achievement for NIT Srinagar, with gratitude expressed towards the administration for their support during the proposal process. The program is anticipated to attract a diverse group of teachers, researchers, and scholars, serving as a major academic initiative for the region while promoting advanced training opportunities and fostering research collaborations.
