Ladakh, Apr 27: In a major administrative decision, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people.
In a post on X, the LG said that the notification for creation of five new districts—Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass—has been approved, taking the total number of districts in Ladakh from the existing two to seven.
He termed the move a “historic day for Ladakh” and said the decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and prosperous region.
The LG said that the proposal had already been approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024 under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
He said the creation of new districts would strengthen grassroots governance, decentralise administration and ensure faster delivery of public services, particularly in remote and far-flung areas.
The move, he added, will also open new avenues for growth, employment and entrepreneurship in the region.
Reaffirming his commitment, the LG said every citizen of Ladakh would benefit from the decision as the Union Territory moves towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
