Srinagar: In a major boost to freight operations and agri-logistics connectivity, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway has successfully facilitated the movement of the first consignment of vermicompost fertilizer from Ambala to Anantnag in Kashmir.
The initiative, driven by the Business Development Unit (BDU) under Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal, marks a key milestone in expanding rail-based freight services for agricultural commodities in the Union Territory.
The consignment, dispatched from Ambala under piecemeal traffic arrangements, reached Anantnag on April 18, officials said.
It consists of 1,200 bags of high-quality vermicompost fertilizer, weighing approximately 60 tonnes.
Officials said the movement was made possible through sustained coordination between the Jammu Division and M/s Sikri Farms, aimed at strengthening commercial linkages and improving logistics efficiency for small and medium-scale traders.
The successful delivery is being seen as part of the Railways’ broader push to enhance freight penetration in the Kashmir Valley and offer cost-effective transportation solutions for agricultural and specialised products.
Railway officials said the initiative reflects growing confidence among traders in rail-based logistics for seamless movement of goods into the Valley, which often faces connectivity and cost challenges through road transport routes.
M/s Sikri Farms, the consignor expressed satisfaction over the timely and efficient handling of the shipment and has indicated plans for regular utilisation of the rail network for future consignments.
Speaking on the development, SDCM Uchit Singhal said the initiative strengthens commercial ties and highlights the role of Indian Railways in ensuring availability of essential agricultural inputs in remote regions.
“This successful operation underscores the Railways’ commitment to facilitating trade and supporting agricultural supply chains in the Kashmir Valley. It is a step towards sustainable and scalable freight growth,” he said.
Officials added that the Jammu Division is actively working to onboard more businesses under its Business Development Unit initiative to increase freight volumes and diversify cargo movement across sectors.
