New Delhi, Apr 14 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that women across the country are welcoming the government’s initiative to ensure reservation for women in legislative bodies, reiterating his commitment to implement a long-pending reform aimed at strengthening their representation in governance.
In a message addressed to “Nari Shakti” and shared on X, the Prime Minister said, “Women across India are appreciating the initiative to ensure reservation for women in legislative bodies.”
He added, “Here is my letter to India’s Nari Shakti, reiterating our commitment to implement what has been pending for decades.”
The Centre had earlier moved forward with the Women’s Reservation legislation, which seeks to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. The proposal, first introduced decades ago, had seen multiple delays and political debates before gaining renewed momentum in recent years.
In his outreach, Modi emphasised the role of women in nation building and highlighted the government’s focus on empowering them through policy measures and increased participation in decision-making processes. The letter is seen as part of a broader effort to engage directly with women across the country and underline the significance of their representation in democratic institutions.
The issue of women’s reservation has long been a subject of political consensus in principle, but differences over implementation have stalled its progress in the past. With the renewed push, the government has projected the move as a step towards inclusive governance and gender equality while also acknowledging that its implementation would mark the culmination of a demand pending for decades.
The Prime Minister’s message comes amid continued political discourse around the timing and rollout of the reservation framework, even as various stakeholders have called for its early implementation to ensure greater participation of women in legislative bodies.
