Baramulla : Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday said they have foiled a major land fraud attempt in Kunzer and arrested seven persons for allegedly impersonating revenue officials and cheating a buyer in a planned conspiracy.

According to police, the accused were posing as land brokers and government officials to fraudulently sell a piece of land at WussanKunzer by fabricating ownership records. One of the accused allegedly impersonated a Patwari, while others posed as revenue officials to lend credibility to the deal. Another accused was presented as the son of the purported landowner, identified as Khursheed Alam.

The fraud came to light after verification by police exposed discrepancies in the ownership claims, leading to the busting of what officials described as a “pre-planned conspiracy” to cheat the complainant.

The complainant, Abdul Ahad Malik of Panzi Nara Shalteng, had already paid ₹4 lakh in cash and ₹10,000 through bank transfer before police intervention. He was allegedly being pressured to arrange an additional ₹20 lakh when the accused were intercepted, preventing further financial loss.

Police identified the arrested accused as Gh Mohammad Wani of Palpora Pulwama, Masood Ahmad Wani of Pir Bagh Srinagar, Md Yousuf Wani of PandithporaKunzer, Md Abdullah Mir of ShilwatSonawari, Bilal Parray of Markundal, Fayaz Ahmad Khanday of Takkanwari Srinagar, and Riyaz Ahmad Mir of Sheikhzoo Ganderbal.

During the operation, police recovered forged revenue documents related to 13.5 kanals of land at WussanBangil under Khasra numbers 271, 272, 273 and 274.

A case has been registered under FIR No. 42/2026 at Police Station Kunzer under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including cheating and impersonation. Further investigation is underway to identify other accomplices and ascertain the full extent of the fraud network.Police have advised the public to exercise caution and verify land records and identities through official channels before entering into property transactions.
