Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday backed the probe ordered by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha into the recent Ganderbal encounter, asserting that a prompt and time-bound inquiry is essential to establish the truth.
Addressing reporters in Jammu, Chief Minister refrained from engaging in the debate over whether a judicial or magisterial probe would be more appropriate.
He said that judicial inquiries often face procedural delays due to the non-availability of sitting or retired judges and existing restrictions on such appointments.
Omar said the priority should be to initiate the investigation without delay and bring out facts transparently.
He expressed confidence that the magisterial inquiry ordered by the Lieutenant Governor would serve the purpose effectively.
The encounter, which took place in the Arhama forest area of Ganderbal on March 31, resulted in the killing of a local resident, Rashid Ahmad Mughal.
While security forces have identified the deceased as a terrorist, his family has contested the claim, alleging a fake encounter and demanding the return of his body for proper burial.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also expressed concern over the evolving situation in West Asia, stressing the need for restraint and responsible communication by global leaders.
Without naming individuals, he questioned the tone of recent statements by international leadership, underscoring the importance of maintaining the dignity of high offices.
CM Omar further voiced concern over the ongoing conflict in the region, stating that prolonged hostilities could have far-reaching consequences. He called for an early ceasefire and restoration of stability, expressing hope that peace would prevail at the earliest.
Reiterating his stance on the Ganderbal case, the Chief Minister said the truth must come out swiftly and transparently, adding that a timely inquiry would help address public concerns and ensure accountability.
