NIT Srinagar Marks International Women’s Day with female alumni, honours women achievers

Speakers stress awareness, leadership and equal opportunities for women across sectors

Srinagar| March, 09:The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar organized the SANGAM Alumni Meet to celebrate the spirit, strength, and achievements of women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, with speakers highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment, awareness and equal participation in leadership, science and public life.

The event brought together distinguished alumni, academicians, engineers, researchers, and around 100 students to recognize the growing contributions of women in diverse fields and to inspire future generations.

One of the highlights of the event was the release of the Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame, followed by a felicitation ceremony honouring alumni who have made remarkable contributions in their respective professional fields.

Delivering the Welcome address, Prof. Kowsar Majid, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Chairperson of the programme, welcomed the distinguished guests, alumni and participants.

She stressed the importance of building supportive professional networks for women.

“Women empowerment is not merely a slogan but a continuous process that requires awareness, mentorship and opportunities. Platforms like Women SANGAM help women connect, learn from each other and strengthen their presence in leadership and professional spaces,” she said.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. M. A. Shah, Dean Alumni & International Affairs, highlighted the objectives of SANGAM (Women) and the importance of collective efforts to promote women’s participation across sectors.

“Empowering women through education, professional support and awareness is essential for building a progressive and inclusive society. Women SANGAM aims to create a strong platform where female alumni can guide and inspire young women to achieve their full potential in the institute and beyond,” he said.

The event featured addresses by several distinguished guests and alumni achievers.

In her remarks, Er. Aaquib Sultana Waheed Deva said that women are increasingly playing vital roles in engineering and public service.

“Women today are proving their capabilities in every field, including engineering and infrastructure development. What we need is continued encouragement, awareness and equal opportunities so that more women can step into leadership roles,” she said.

Er. Anbreena Anjum highlighted the importance of confidence and perseverance in professional life.

“Women must believe in their abilities and continue to pursue excellence. Awareness, education and supportive environments can help women overcome barriers and contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.

Other speakers included Er. Faheema Amin, Er. Iqra Manzoor, Er. Toyiba, Er. Salsabeel and entrepreneur Er. Sana Aftab, who shared their professional journeys and experiences, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for women in engineering, research, education and entrepreneurship.

In his message, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, Director NIT Srinagar, lauded the achievements of women alumni and highlighted the institute’s efforts in promoting innovation, research and gender inclusivity in higher education.

“Institutions have a crucial role in promoting awareness, equality and opportunities for women. Encouraging women in science, technology and leadership is essential for building a stronger and more innovative society,” he said.

Registrar NIT Srinagar, Prof. Atikur Rehman, also emphasised the importance of encouraging women in science, technology and leadership roles.

“Initiatives like Women SANGAM help build strong professional networks and create awareness about the importance of women’s participation in academic and technical fields,” he said.

During the programme, the Lalla Ded Award – 2026 instituted by Prof Shah and conferred to Prof. Semin Rubab in recognition of her contributions in both science and society field.

The second session of the event included an expert talk by Prof. Kowsar Majid, who spoke about the welfare measures of Womens.
