EIACP J&K Hub organises educational tour for students to Gharana Wetland

Jammu : The Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, through its EIACP J&K Hub, on Saturday organised an educational tour and cleanliness drive at the internationally significant Gharana Wetland.
The programme was organised for the students and faculty of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Government Degree College, R.S. Pura, with the objective of creating awareness about the ecological importance of wetlands and promoting environmental responsibility.
The event commenced with a rally aimed at spreading awareness against plastic pollution, during which participants actively contributed towards making the wetland area plastic-free. Students enthusiastically participated in the cleanliness drive, reinforcing the message of conservation and sustainable practices.
Later, Coordinator- EIACP Dr. Rajan Singh addressed the gathering and delivered an informative lecture on the importance of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance. He highlighted the role of Gharana Wetland as a vital habitat for migratory birds, elaborating on their seasonal movement, biodiversity value and the need for strict conservation measures to protect such fragile ecosyste
Forester Dheeraj Rampal interacted with the students and provided valuable insights into the wetland ecosystem. He explained the ecological functions of wetlands, their role in supporting wildlife and the importance of community participation in wetland conservation.
The educational tour was accompanied by faculty members of GDC R.S. Pura including Dr. Priya Darshni, Head of Department, Environmental Sciences, Dr. Sudesh and other teaching staff.
The EIACP team comprised Range Officer Anil Sharma, Dr. Kirti Bhatt, Nitin Sharma and Chetan Gupta, who provided technical inputs and guided students during the activity.
The programme proved to be highly informative and engaging, providing students with hands-on exposure to wetland ecosystems and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship. Such initiatives by the EIACP, J&K, play a crucial role in sensitising young minds towards conservation of natural resources.
