Batting first, Italy scored 156 or four, with middle order batter Smuts top scoring with 49 runs of 37 balls with five fours and a six.
Thanks to short contributions from the top and middle order, Italy managed to cross the 150-mark.
In reply, Canada fell apart at the late stages after a good start adding 55 in 6.4 overs and fell short by ten runs.
