Indeed the present Era is widely regarded as the time of science and technology. This period is often referred to as the “Information Age” or the “ Age Of Digital World” characterized by rapid advancements that have fundamentally transformed virtually every aspect of life and society from communication and commerce to education and healthcare . Science and Technology has changed all walks of life as new trends and techniques are being adopted in every field . Former President of India Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam rightly said “Science is a beautiful gift for humanity, we should not distort it.” “All of us do not have equal talent , but all of us have equal opportunity to develop our talents .” Science, technology and social media intertwine to revolutionize communication ,education and research allowing teachers and scientists to share contents and discoveries and engage the public and students and also serving as powerful tools for Education and Awareness despite several challenges . Different platforms facilitate learning , connecting students and teachers and offering interactive ways to understand subjects beyond traditional methods . Today, we can see that the Educational institutions adopting new developments into their system and relying on group resources and mechanisms to improve students’ life. The use of social media in education helps students, teachers and parents to get more useful information to connect with learning groups and other educational systems that make education convenient . The influence of social media in education is undeniable .Not only it has transformed the way students communicate with each other and with their teachers but it has also opened up new opportunities for collaborative learning, knowledge sharing and the development of digital skills. But, all of us know that the present day impact of social media on the mental health of students’ is multifaceted with both positive and negative aspects. Mental health is represented as a state of well-being in which individuals recognize their potential, successfully navigate daily challenges, and perform effectively at work. Numerous studies on social media’s effects have been conducted, and it has been proposed that prolonged use of social media sites may be linked to negative manifestations and symptoms of depression and anxiety. So, it should be recognized that its use poses certain challenges and it is very important to understand how we can maximize its advantages while at the same time minimizing its disadvantages.
Positive Aspects: Social Media has several positive impacts on students’ mental health.
Connection, Support: Social media allows students to connect with peers , fostering a sense of belonging and community . Support groups and online platforms provide emotional support and understanding .
Awareness, Education: Social media campaigns can raise awareness about various issues , reducing stigma and encouraging open discussion among stakeholders .
Self Expression: Social media provides a space for students to express themselves creatively and share their thoughts and boost self esteem .
Access To Resources : Students can easily find resources including articles and other contents according to their needs ,which can help them to learn and fulfill their needs and address their concerns .
Engagement In Positive Activities: Many students use social media to engage in hobbies , join groups or participate in challenges that promote mental well-being , such as fitness and mindfulness initiatives.

Inspiration, Motivation: Positive content , such as success stories and motivational quotes inspire students and provide them the encouragement they need to overcome challenges .
Networking Opportunities: Social media facilitates connections with mentors professionals, teachers and like minded individuals and it helps students to build their networks and gain confidence.
Customization Of Content: Students can curate their feeds to focus on positive uplifting contents that supports their mental health , helping to replace negative influences.
Awareness Regarding Mental Health Issues: Exposure to discussions about mental health helps students to recognize their own feelings and seek help when needed , knowing they are not alone in their experiences .
Crises Support: In some cases , in times of distress , social media can be a quick way to reach out for help or find immediate support from friends or online communities . There are several other uses and aspects of social media which directly help the student in various ways .These positive elements can contribute to a supportive environment for students mental health.
Negative Aspects| Comparison, Low self-Esteem: Constant exposure to curated images and lifestyles can lead to unhealthy comparison, fostering feeling of inadequacy and low self-worth.
Addiction, Time Management: Excessive use of social media can lead to addiction, reducing academic performance and hindering real life social interactions. Constant engagement with social media may lead to lack of time management.
Risk Of Cyber Bulling: There is a risk of cyberbulling while doing excessive use of social media , which can lead to anxiety, depression and social withdrawal etc.
Sleep Disruption: Late night use of social media can disrupt sleep patterns, contributing to fatigue ,irritability and decreased cognitive function .
Social Isolation: Paradoxically, increased online interactions may reduce face to face social skills, leading to feeling of loneliness and isolation.
Role Of Parents, Teachers: Parents and teachers must collaborate to guide students on safe, responsible social media use by focusing on various beneficial ways.
Role Of Parents: Parents have a crucial role in guiding their children on social media use by setting some rules , teaching digital citizenship , prioritizing privacy and security ,monitoring and taking care, communicating openly and taking other positive steps as well to mitigate risks and to promote healthy habits .
Role Of Teachers: Teachers also have a responsibility to guide their learners on social media use in numerous ways by teaching them the digital citizenship , media literacy ,online safety and security , cyber bulling prevention , mental health awareness and digital footprint and reputation etc.
