Srinagar : The University of Kashmir (KU) on Tuesday hosted 17th National Youth Parliament Competition, organised by the Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW) under the aegis of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, at the University’s Convocation Complex.
The event successfully gathered trained student parliamentarians who showcased their understanding of legislative procedures and parliamentary conduct, attended by faculty, officers, research scholars, and students. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan praised the participants for their confidence and discipline, emphasizing the University’s commitment to fostering leadership, critical thinking, and democratic values through such initiatives that enhance students’ understanding of parliamentary operations. Justice (Retd.) Hasnain Masoodi, a former MP, acknowledged the significance of Youth Parliament initiatives in reinforcing democracy at the grassroots level. Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal highlighted the Youth Parliament as a crucial platform for developing informed and responsible citizens, commending the students’ commitment and maturity during their training while reiterating the University’s support for programs that expand students’ national exposure. Shri Sharad Dwivedi from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs commended the professionalism of the event and the enthusiasm of the participants. Dean DSW Prof. Pervez Ahmed welcomed attendees and expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its ongoing support. Dr. Shahid Ali Khan, the Cultural Officer and mentor of the Youth Parliament team, detailed the rigorous 60-day training that 55 students underwent, covering essential aspects of Lok Sabha procedures and parliamentary conduct, which prepared them to perform with authenticity. In a competitive landscape, 51 teams from across India participated at the group level, with only eight teams, including the University of Kashmir, advancing to the national round. The top eight teams will compete for the final honor, with the winning team earning the opportunity to present in the Parliament of India before Members of Parliament and Union Ministers.
