MP Khatana Calls for a United Fight Against Drug Abuse to Protect Youth, Society

Jammu: Rajya Sabha MP and senior BJP leader Gulam Ali Khatana today attended a Substance Abuse Awareness Programme as the Chief Guest at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust Complex, Jammu. The programme was organised by the Brigadier Khuda Bakhsh Memorial Public Higher Secondary School under the aegis of the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust (GDCT) to spread awareness among students, parents, and the community about the growing threat of drug abuse and the need to keep youth away from this danger.

Speaking on the occasion MP Khatana said that drug addiction is one of the most serious challenges facing society today, and every section of society must come together to fight it. He stressed that drugs ruin young lives and families, and this battle cannot be left to the government alone — parents, teachers, and community elders all have an important role to play in guiding and protecting the youth from this menace.

He said that the drug menace has become one of the biggest social and youth-related challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, affecting thousands of families and destroying the potential of young people. He mentioned that a large number of drug users in the region are between the ages of 17 and 33, which makes the issue even more alarming.

He said that this problem is not only a matter of law and order but a social epidemic that requires joint efforts from society, government, and families. He emphasised that along with strong action against drug suppliers and smugglers, there is an urgent need to focus on awareness, rehabilitation, and youth engagement in positive activities like sports, skill development, and education. He said that frustration among youth often make them vulnerable to drug abuse, and therefore the focus must be on creating opportunities and ensuring a supportive environment for them to grow. He urged people to form village and community-level anti-drug committees, and appealed to parents and teachers to take active roles in guiding the younger generation towards a healthier and disciplined life.

Khatana also spoke about the rights and welfare of tribal and marginalised communities, especially the Gujjars, Bakerwals, and other backward sections, who are being empowered through various welfare schemes launched by the Modi Government.

He said that initiatives like the PM Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), PM Awas Yojana, and education and skill development programmes are helping tribal families improve their lives and secure a better future.

“The Central Government has given new hope and opportunities to the tribal and marginalised communities. It is now our duty to ensure that our youth stay healthy and free from drugs so they can make the most of these opportunities,” Khatana added.
