BJP MLAs protest, 3 marshalled out after storming into well
Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday witnessed disruption on Thursday amid allegations of corruption within the Roads & Buildings Department by the main opposition BJP and the Speaker’s refusal to permit an adjournment motion.
Witnesses said that BJP legislators demanded a discussion on the recent floods that have severely impacted the region. They had submitted a motion to suspend routine business for this discussion, which the Speaker rejected, citing procedural rules. In response to the Speaker’s decision, Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma criticized the government for avoiding the flood issue, emphasizing the widespread devastation caused by heavy rainfall. He called for the suspension of the Question Hour to address the concerns of flood-affected citizens. During the session, BJP members waved newspaper reports alleging irregularities in tender allotments, particularly targeting the Deputy Chief Minister’s constituency. The atmosphere escalated as BJP legislators chanted slogans against the government, while members of the National Conference (NC) countered with their own chants. Despite the Speaker’s repeated requests for order, protests continued, culminating in the removal of three BJP legislators who entered the well of the House. The session remained tumultuous, with both BJP and NC members exchanging accusations and slogans. Ultimately, the BJP legislators staged a walkout but returned shortly thereafter, indicating ongoing tensions within the assembly.
