Srinagar: Police on Wednesday said that it has arrested five drug peddlers in Awantipora, Shopian & Sopore and recovered contraband substances from their possession.
According to a police statement issued here on Wednesday in Awantipora, a police team led by the Station House Officer (SHO) during a naka checking at Tulbagh Pampore intercepted a vehicle with two individuals, Younis Nisar Joo and Syed Majid Altaf. During the search, authorities recovered 30 grams of a substance resembling Charas Powder and arrested both the suspects besides seizing the vehicle involved in the crime. In another police operation at Melhura Zainapora in Shopian two women drug peddlers were arrested from whom15 kilograms of crushed Cannabis and 1 kilogram of a Charas-like substance was seized. Additionally, in Sopore, a police party apprehended a drug peddler named Junaid Mushtaq Tabardar during a naka checking at Sidiq Colony. A significant quantity of psychotropic substances, including Codeine Phosphate bottles and Alprazolam tablets, was recovered from the possession of the said accused. Following these operations cases were registered under relevant legal provisions at the respective police stations. Investigations are underway to trace both the forward and backward linkages in order to uncover the broader network involved in drug trafficking. Police in its statement reiterated its commitment to zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse and trafficking besides which authorities also appealed people to come forward with any information regarding drug peddling or other anti-social activities in their areas.
