Srinagar: Authorities have assured the public that the situation regarding the swelling Jhelum River, due to heavy rainfall, remains under control. They have urged both citizens and journalists to refrain from spreading panic through frequent updates or alarmist posts. Current gauge readings indicate that the Jhelum at Sangam is at 27.60 ft and at Ram Munshi Bagh at 21.67 ft, slightly above the danger mark but still within safe limits.
Officials said that similar levels in 2015 did not result in flooding, emphasizing that the river is considered safe up to 23 ft at Ram Munshi Bagh, provided there are no breaches in the embankments, which currently pose no threat. They contrasted the current situation with the catastrophic floods of 2014, which occurred only after the river reached record levels significantly higher than today’s readings. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also called for calm, noting that critical infrastructure has not been compromised and that the river’s rise is slower than anticipated. He reassured the public that the administration is vigilant and closely monitoring the situation while discouraging belief in unfounded rumors. Officials reiterated the importance of responsible reporting to prevent unnecessary panic among the public, emphasizing that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
