Srinagar: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, on Thursday said the Khelo India Water Sports Festival in Srinagar reflects the government’s commitment to promoting sports, talent and tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. She added that sports and tourism have the potential to propel the region onto the global stage.
Speaking at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival held at Dal Lake here, Khadse said the government is committed to nurturing sports talent and promoting tourism in the region.
She further said that respecting local sentiments is paramount. “We cannot hurt the feelings of our people; the nation and its citizens come first,” the minister added. Her remarks came in response to ongoing restrictions regarding sports exchanges with Pakistan.
Addressing the event at SKICC Srinagar, Khadse said more than 400 athletes are participating in various competitions at Dal Lake. “There is great enthusiasm among our youth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to boost both sports and sports tourism. If we integrate tourism with sports, we can elevate J&K’s profile to an international level,” she said.
The Union MoS assured that the government is working to provide world-class facilities to athletes across the Union Territory. “Every district is set to receive five Khelo India centres. Talent identification programs are underway, and our goal is for J&K’s youth to excel on international platforms and bring medals home,” she added.
When asked about the restrictions on Indian players travelling to Pakistan and Pakistani players not being allowed to participate in India, Khadse affirmed that the government’s stance is justified.
“We cannot compromise on national sentiments. Our nation and citizens’ interests are paramount. While sports contribute to development, national security and sentiments take precedence,” she asserted.
The Khelo India Water Sports Festival is the first-of-its-kind event held on Dal Lake, featuring a diverse range of activities, including rowing, canoeing, and kayaking, along with cultural performances, showcasing the rich heritage and sporting spirit of the region
