Jammu, New Delhi| Aug, 15: A devastating cloudburst in the Chashoti area of Kishtwar on Thursday killed atleast thirty-two people and triggered flash floods, particularly impacting the route of the Machail Mata Yatra. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and assured full central assistance after the cloudburst.Shah said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have already been rushed to the site.
Reports said that rescue operations are currently underway, led by the White Knight Corps, with efforts focused on searching for missing individuals and providing relief to affected families. The local administration, supported by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), is actively evacuating residents, delivering medical aid, and assessing damage in the region.
Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has assured support for the affected families, stating that the Air Force is on standby for evacuations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences and confirmed that the central government is closely monitoring the situation and will provide necessary assistance. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also coordinated with local officials to ensure a comprehensive response to the disaster.
The cloudburst occurred during a peak time for pilgrims, causing significant destruction in the area, including the severing of road links to remote locations. The situation has been described as “grim” by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, highlighting the urgent need for continued rescue and relief efforts.
