New Vande Bharat Set to Roll From Vaishno Devi to Golden Temple
Srinagar: In a major push to boost pilgrimage tourism and regional connectivity, Northern Railway is all set to launch a brand-new Vande Bharat Express between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Amritsar on August 10, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagging off the service through video conferencing. The new service one of Indian Railways’ latest high-speed premium trains will link the holy town of Katra in Jammu & Kashmir with the spiritual and cultural hub of Amritsar in Punjab. The route will pass through key stations including Jammu, Pathankot, and Jalandhar, promising a comfortable, fast, and modern travel experience to lakhs of pilgrims and tourists.
A Strategic Boost For Pilgrimage Tourism: According to Northern Railway officials, the launch of the Katra–Amritsar Vande Bharat Express is designed to cater directly to pilgrimage traffic as well as enhance daily connectivity between the two regions. Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Jammu Division saod that the service will have special significance for devotees visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine. “Katra is among the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. This new Vande Bharat will ease travel for devotees, saving both time and effort while offering unmatched comfort,” Singhal said. The shrine attracts millions of devotees each year, and the base town Katra has historically depended on road and slower rail options. The Vande Bharat, with its semi-high-speed capability, is expected to substantially cut travel time, making same-day trips more feasible for visitors from Punjab and neighbouring states.
Convenient Timings For Day Travel: The service will run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays, under train numbers 26407 and 26405. Train No. 26407, from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Amritsar, will depart at 6:40 AM and reach its destination at 12:20 PM, halting at Jammu, Pathankot Cantt, Jalandhar City, and Beas along the way. In the reverse direction, Train No. 26405 will leave Amritsar at 4:25 PM and arrive in Katra at 10:00 PM, making the same stops in reverse order. The schedule is designed to ensure that passengers can travel to and from either city within the same day. This convenience will benefit not only pilgrims but also tourists and business travelers who require efficient connections for short visits or same-day returns.
A Link Between Two Prime Religious Destination: Officials believe that the new service will be a vital link between two of northern India’s most important religious destinations Vaishno Devi and the Golden Temple while also serving the cities in between. “The service will ensure better connectivity between Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab, particularly for pilgrims, tourists, and traders,” Singhal noted. Apart from spiritual tourism, the train is expected to enhance trade and cultural exchange between the two regions, which share deep historical and economic ties. The cultural flow between Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, from cuisine to handicrafts, is expected to receive a fresh boost with improved passenger movement.

Officials foresee increased footfall not just in the terminal cities but also in Jammu, Pathankot, and Jalandhar, which are important urban and commercial hubs. A senior Northern Railway official said that the Vande Bharat Express is not just a train but a catalyst for economic and tourism growth. “It will generate opportunities for local businesses, artisans, and service providers along the route,” the official said.
Readiness For The Inaugural Run: Northern Railway has finalised all operational, safety, and passenger-related arrangements ahead of the inaugural run. Special staff deployment is planned for the first week to assist passengers unfamiliar with the new train’s features. Station authorities at Katra, Jammu, Pathankot, Jalandhar, and Amritsar have been instructed to ensure smooth boarding and de-boarding, robust security arrangements, and real-time passenger information. Large LED screens have been installed at major stations to display train details, while additional security has been deployed at Katra and Amritsar given the high-profile nature of the service and the Prime Minister’s involvement in its launch. Voices From The People: Several passengers have already expressed excitement over the service. Rajinder Singh, a businessman from Amritsar, said, “I visit Vaishno Devi twice a year. Earlier, the journey was long and tiring. Now, with Vande Bharat, I can travel comfortably and save nearly two hours each way.” Meena Sharma, a schoolteacher from Jammu, noted, “It will be easier to take students on educational trips to Amritsar. The train’s schedule fits perfectly for day visits.” Such feedback reflects the anticipation surrounding the train’s operational launch.
Future Prospects, Expansion Plans: Railway officials have hinted that if the passenger response is strong, more Vande Bharat services could be introduced linking Katra with Delhi and other major cities. The success of the Katra–Amritsar service could also pave the way for shorter-distance semi-high-speed services within Jammu & Kashmir once the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla rail link is fully operational.
Inauguration Day Festivities: On August 10, the train will be virtually flagged off by Prime Minister Modi from New Delhi, with local events simultaneously organised at Katra and Amritsar stations. Cultural programmes showcasing Dogri and Punjabi folk traditions are planned at both terminals, while special souvenir tickets and inaugural journey certificates will be issued to passengers on the first run. Railway officials and local dignitaries will interact with the passengers and media, making the event both a transport milestone and a cultural celebration.
